In today’s ever-growing, uber-competitive media landscape, it’s never been harder to break through and grab someone’s attention. And I mean really pay attention, not just scanning headlines but, reading an entire article, watching a full two-minute TV segment or listening to a 20-minute podcast interview.

This is where great storytelling comes in. It’s about sparking real interest and making people want to learn more or take action. That spark of curiosity is the sweet spot.

Earned media – authentic publicity that positively impacts an organization’s brand – has not changed. The means in achieving one’s goal of earned media placements certainly has. Attention spans are shorter. Timeliness is a must-have. Often, the question boils down to why should people pay attention and care about your story?

Communications professionals have the answer. As media evolves, and campaign strategies change alongside it, be adaptable and creative. Open-mindedness and transparency matter. Above all, authenticity resonates.

Earned media is evolving, but it’s not extinct. There is plenty of opportunity to craft and share meaningful stories. At the end of the day, every good storyteller brings the story to a fitting conclusion that leaves you wanting more.
