You don’t get to make the first impression anymore.

Long before someone calls your office or fills out a contact form, they’ve already been looking you up. They’ve read your Google reviews, scanned your LinkedIn page, searched your name, clicked through your website and maybe even asked AI what it knows about your company.

By the time you finally meet, they’ve already formed an opinion.

That’s why reputation matters more than ever.

Public relations has always been about telling your story, but today it’s also about making sure people find the right story in the first place. Every media interview, leadership article, customer review and social media post adds another layer to how your business is perceived.

Those moments build trust long before a sales conversation ever begins.

We see it all the time. A company invests in advertising, launches a beautiful new website and posts consistently on social media. Yet when a potential customer or client starts doing a little homework, there isn’t much there to reinforce why they should believe in the brand.

People don’t buy because you’ve said you’re great. They buy because someone else has shown them you are.

That’s where earned media, thought leadership, community involvement and a consistent communications strategy make a difference. They give people confidence before they’ve ever shaken your hand.

The same is true when something goes wrong.

No organization is immune from a difficult headline, an unhappy customer or an unexpected crisis. What determines how quickly you recover isn’t the event itself. It’s the reputation you’ve been building all along. Organizations that communicate consistently, respond thoughtfully and show up with transparency earn far more grace than those that only find their voice when there’s a problem. That principle sits at the center of every crisis communications plan we develop.

Your reputation is always working.

The question is whether it’s working for you.
