The Baker Agency, a full-service, woman-owned communications agency with offices in Albany, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Pa., and St. Petersburg, Fla., is seeking an innovative and growth-minded Director to join our expanding team across three locations and nationally. The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in public relations and marketing and will be responsible for driving integrated communications strategies that deliver measurable impact. The on-site Director will be a dynamic leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is committed to business development and excels at building strong client relationships. Some travel between offices and client sites, as well as occasional after-hours work, will be required to meet client and agency needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate and close new business leads, supporting agency growth with a minimum of $100k annually in new business development.
  • Assist in the research, writing and development of new business proposals and high-level presentations.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day strategic contact for clients, overseeing and supervising account teams to ensure the successful execution of integrated PR, marketing and advocacy campaigns. Provide effective leadership, mentorship and performance management for direct reports and junior staff.
  • Oversee various issues and advocacy campaigns; oversee account support and management, writing and research, content and creative service needs; utilize vendors and outside consultants as needed to carry out client requirements, impact issues and maintain a favorable public image for private and public organizations, municipalities, associations and non-profits.
  • Write compelling and on-brand messaging and advocacy content for traditional, digital and social platforms, and provide general insights into managing social media campaigns and efforts.
  • Lead or support colleagues in creating advocacy materials, press releases, media advisories, scripts, speeches, talking points, blog content, social media postings and advertising copy.
  • Provide media training to clients and team members to ensure effective spokesperson performance in interviews and public appearances.
  • Provide strategic counsel to clients and associations with support from senior members of the agency; establish high-level influencer, elected official staff, and community business relationships, including key political print, broadcast and digital journalists. Lead crisis communications planning, response and management for clients, ensuring effective messaging and reputation protection during high-pressure situations.
  • Lead, supervise and motivate the team in delivering policy briefs to clients; create and manage client public affairs and issue campaign budgets and work with team members to ensure that all projects are completed within budget and on time.
  • Attend networking events, policy forums and media events, as well as meetings with clients, partner organizations and elected officials to discuss issue campaigns and activities.

 Qualifications:

  • 7–10+ years of experience in public relations or strategic communications, preferably in an agency.
  • Proven success in business development, including lead generation, proposal development and closing new business opportunities.
  • Strong experience building, scaling, or leading integrated public affairs, PR or marketing campaigns across diverse sectors and markets.
  • Proven client management skills, with expertise serving as the day-to-day contact and managing multiple regional, statewide or national accounts.
  • Expertise in developing and executing integrated campaigns (PR, marketing) across paid, earned, shared and owned channels.
  • Exceptional writing, messaging and storytelling skills, with experience developing a range of advocacy, PR and marketing materials.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with elected officials, policymakers, community leaders, media, clients and key stakeholders.
  • Strong communicator and strategic thinker, able to provide high-level counsel to clients and internal teams.
  • Experience managing budgets, timelines, and cross-functional teams, including coordinating vendors, consultants, and internal resources.
  • Proactive, growth-minded leader who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering impactful client initiatives.
